Due to low shooter turn out during cold winter days on Range 4, as well as diminished military use of Range 3. we have greater flexibility and time to assist new shooters who want to go to 300 , 600, 800 and 1000 yds. So, come on out and by spring, you'll be in the groove and shooting on 1000 yard line comfortably. We have a universal rule on Rg 4 : we don't leave a yard line till you are sorted out...and all of us will patiently wait while you get things right. We'll bail to help you and and spot for you and help you advance. Now you can buy this sort of experience for huge bucks or you can show up and get going with us. The talent on Rg 4 makes most of those expensive shooting schools suck swamp water.
Every shooter here has been where a beginner starts at. We'll help you if you show up. So..ya gotta show up.
PS: 1000 yd is only 10 footballs fields, its not biggie. We'll get you to 1000 yds but be warned once you get there, shooting long range is highly addictive.
I haven't seen a 300/600 day posted on the calender in a while. The furthest I've taken my rifle is R305 max distance (I believe 450 yards?). I'm not sure if I can go straight to 600 from there or if I need a 300/600 to start.
Any advice? Should I just come straight to a 600/800 yard day? I'm eager to get to 800/1000, I just dont want to come when I'll be wasting anyones time.
Sir,
I am responding 10 Jan and we have Rg 4 sked for 12 Jan and I know they'll shoot at least 600 yd but snow may be a issue and its a day when we have a club meeting in morning so it won't be a long day on Rg 4. Nevertheless, watch to see if this range holds for 12 Jan and try to get out there. If you've done Rg 305, you are ready for 600 yd line and RSO's will get you shooting that distance in a few shots. Don't worry on that. Now if Rg 4 does not happen (weather or your schedule) try to come out anytime we are shooting 600 yds and we'll get you rolling and ready to move to 800 . Call me if you want to discuss any of this: Skip/ 703 987 7520
That's great! Thank you very much for the reply :-) I can't wait to come out and give it a try!
Hello, I just joined the club and am definitely interested. This sounds like a pretty awesome opportunity. Not new to shooting but new to long range. I don't currently own a rifle that is suited for this type of shooting but am planning on buying one soon (was thinking tikka t3 in .308).
I shoot a Tikka T3 in 308 and it goes all the way to 1000 yds. Its a 24" barrel as that is as long as they sell them here in USA. Some thoughts for you, 308 can do 1000 yds but my opinion is 24" barrel limits you. That said, I shoot a 24" barrel and do right well but 308 is at its limits at 1000 yds and a short barrel does not help ! You are free to come to Rg4 and shoot my Tikka and decide for your self. The Tikka with best hand loads will do 10 inch (1 MOA) at 1000yds and sometimes a bit better (if you can hold rifle that still) but you work like heck to make that 24" barrel bring in accuracy. Far easier with a 26" barrel .
Recommend you come by Rg 4 anytime we are shooting and see what shooters are using, find out lessons learned before you buy anything. Lots of stuff to talk about that factor how you approach long range shooting...for instance, how do you define accuracy? Is it tight shot groups on paper, shooting single 4.5 inch diameter skeet birds on the bank , shooting large NRA /CMP bulls eye targets with large scoring rings , shooting man size silhouette targets, pinging steel (and what size steel). We have guys who bought steel and found shooting skeet birds is more challenging and less cost / logistics yet we do have guys who ping steel all day long and are happy shooting at 20x20 inch steel plate...others shoot a 10x10 inch plate and some 8x8 inch plate. Its almost a sure thing to shoot 20x20 steel...thats huge and 2 MOA , which is just too easy but from 1000 yds, many find that awesome and good with it....and to do that, they bought a rifle with that kind of accuracy. So...what kind of accuracy from 800 / 1000 yds are you wanting and that defined, that sets conditions for a wise rifle / caliber decision. Come out to Rg 4 and get situational awareness, we'll gladly assist you. If you want to talk Rg 4 shooting, call me : Skip , 703 987 7520. By the way, its 10 Jan and we have a 1000 yd shooting day planned for 13 Jan in the snow / snow flurries and unless base closes down, we'll shoot in that weather as its very challenging and rewarding. Just know: we shoot any weather on Rg 4.
Just to add to the 308 conversation at 1000 yards. While I was crunching numbers for wind i noticed that the drift difference between 10 mph and 11 mph wind was as much as 10 inches (175 SMK) which is enough to knock you off a 1 moa target. I find shooting the berm easier simply cause impacts are easier to notice, and I can quickly make adjustments and make a follow up shot before the wind changes too much.
Shooting clay birds for me provides instant feedback. The one new development is range cameras and we now have a few shooters using them. They can see and mark hits on bulls eye on KD frame. Logistically , skeet birds are cheap, easy to put up and bio degradable. Lots easier than hauling steel targets around in my view.
I am new to the club and have done some 1200 yard shooting before. I primarily train for hunting applications. I would like to get out on a day when I can sight in my new rifle at 200 yards, which to my knowledge is the best point blank range for hunting applications for that round which would allow me to hold dead center from 0-300 yards. After that, it's game on and I'd love to play at longer ranges. I took my .Savage 300 Win Mag to Bang Steel two years ago and definitely agree that hearing that ding at 1000-1200 yards is a lot of fun. I was planning to wait for a range 305 day to get started, but if there is a day on the schedule that seems appropriate to accomplish that goal, let me know, and I'll definitely be there.

Calendar says Range 3 for 12 Jan. Is that correct or is it Range 4?
Sir,,
Club had to move to Rg 3 because military reserved Rg 4. Always watch calendar for range info updates. You can call me 703 987 7520 and I'd be happy to relay the latest status as I know it. / Skip
