2026 tick populations are at higher than normal levels. Ticks carry several diseases that can really mess you up so the best prevention is to not get a tick bite. Commonly used products include DEET and Permethrin.

DEET - Deet is applied to skin and clothes. Products should have a DEET concentration above 20%, which is 85% effective against ticks, are best. Products above 35% do not provide higher or longer protection. Deet products should be washed off at the end of the day.

PERMETHRIN - Is applied to EXTERIOR clothing, NOT to the skin (it will not bond with skin and quickly breaks down). Permethrin bonds to clothing and when dry, creates a shield that can last up to 6 weeks, even with laundering. Properly applied, permethrin is 100% effective against ticks.

Ticks are ground-based but will also climb to the tops of stems, grass, etc., just waiting for you to walk by so they can crawl on to you to find a better home. Be aware, use shooting mats and check yourself after a range day as early detection and removal (usually withing 24hrs) can lessen the chances of disease transfer.
