Multiple Steel Targets at Differing Distances on Range 4

As you know, QSC has been limited on Range 4 to shooting known distance from static shooting positions, for example, a 300 yard day is accomplished by shooting from the 300 yard firing line to the berm. The same all the way out to shooting 1,000y from the 1,000y firing line. This tends to become repetative and boring if you frequent R4.

Range control has advised we can abide by the R4 SOP, which allows for the placement of steel targets from the 500 yard line and forward when shooting long distance. There are restrictions, for example you won't be shooting 338 Lapua or a 50BMG at the closer steel (surface danger zone and airspace restrictions), and we have to ensure there are no person's firing on R3 or Comp Pistol at the same time, but we can add some unknown distance steel targets on many of the long range days.

Our intent is to continue to challenge our shooters by offering differing distance targets so members can move away static, known distance shooting, to requiring they determine distances and using their Data Of Previous Engagements (DOPE), solve for distance to target, dial the distance on their optic and perform a 1st round hit on the steel targets!

We tested this the weekend of 17 April when we took the far right side of Range 4 and placed targets at 634y, 667y, 690y, 732y, 769y and 1,001 yards. It was a great exercise for the shooters to test their DOPE and ability to get hits on those dissimilar distance targets.

We intend to offer the differing targets as a routine to Range 4 days when at 1,000 yards.
