Ironman- Recreational Fire

Ironman is a general-purpose pistol, rifle, and tactical shotgun fire range. Distances are 7 yards to 460 / 700+ yards.  Recreational calibers are authorized up to and including .338 Lapua and 50 BMG. However, Range Control may place restrictions on authorized calibers at any time for any reason. Their decisions are NOT negotiable. Do not ask the RSOs to question Range Control’s  decisions.

Empty Chamber Indicators (ECIs) are mandatory for ALL FIREARMS on the Ironman Range. No exceptions. If you need ECIs for your firearms, please stop by the clubhouse and purchase one  for each firearm you intend to shoot on the range.

The following are prohibited on the Ironman range:

• Fully automatic fire
• Binary, forced reset triggers or bump stocks (simulated automatic fire)
• Tracer rounds / incendiary (API) rounds of any kind
• Trash, brass or ammo in the Port-a-Johns
• “Boutique” calibers such as 375 and 416 Cheytac
• Dueling Trees, Texas Stars, or other gimmick-like targets
• Executing shooting drills of any kind

.338 and .50 calibers require air space clearance only granted at the time of range opening. It is strongly advised to bring a back-up rifle of another caliber in the event MCBQ Range Control cannot clear the airspace on the day of the shooting event.

Form 1 and Form 4 firearms are permitted on the Ironman range.

All shooters from 8 to 17 years of age may only shoot under the direct supervision of a qualified adult, which means the adult must be present on the firing line and in direct supervisory contact of the child or young adult shooter. No one under 8 years of age will be allowed onto the range. Ages 8 – 12 Limited to Rimfire Only.

GENERAL INFORMATION: If the gate is open and the red flag is not up, this means the RSOs are not present. DO NOT ENTER Ironman Range until the RSOs arrive.

Please present your current QSC membership card upon sign in.  Prior to entering the range, all guests must check in at the QSC Clubhouse and pay guest fee, sign waivers and present guest pass to a range RSO prior to shooting. 

Drawing from Holsters: Drawing from holster is permitted at the discretion of the RSOs on the Ironman range. If the range is crowded, the RSOs may restrict all drawing from the holster until the range is less crowded.

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING DRAWING FROM THE HOLSTER: If drawing from the holster is permitted by the RSO team, the ONLY holsters shooters may draw from on ranges operated by the QSC are Outside the Waistband (OWB) strong side holsters. Any other holstering units may not to be used on the Ironman Range. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Range Operating Notes:

• At the start of the range day, you may bring CASED firearms to the firing line during target set up time. 
• ALL FIREARMS WILL REMAIN CASED until after the safety briefing is complete and RSOs have communicated that the firing line is Hot.
• If you are planning on firing multiple weapons during a rec fire event, all weapons not being fired must remain cased until you are ready to fire that weapon.
• When a weapon is on the firing line and is not being fired, the bolt or slide will be open, magazine/ ammo source will be removed, the safety will be in the “on” position and an ECI will be inserted in the weapon’s chamber.
• There will be no handling of uncased firearms while the firing line is cold.
• Shooters must be prepared to case all weapons at the last cease fire. If your weapon needs time to cool down, please make plans to do so prior to 1230.
• Our objective is to maintain a cycle of 45/15 minute hot/cold times throughout the day.
• Shooters showing up throughout the day will first sign in and then receive a safety brief from an RSO prior to carrying gear to the firing line.

TARGETS: Shooters must bring their own targets, target stands, tools, fasteners, personal protective equipment, and other materials. Targets are limited to paper, wood, plastic, and approved ballistic steel.

IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING TARGETS: Please ensure your target stands can withstand the wind on the Ironman range. If your target falls over because it’s not properly anchored, you will have to wait until the next cold time to make corrections.

All shooters MUST bring target systems with them to the range. The QSC DOES NOT provide target systems to members or guests. You will not be permitted to fire a weapon on the Ironman range without a target system in place. In other words, you will not be permitted to fire any weapon into thin air.

Steel Targets

• Ballistic steel targets must be a minimum of 3/8" thick and constructed of AR-500 steel. 
• All steel targets must be mounted or hung with a forward cant to deflect all bullet fragments towards the ground. 
• Steel targets must not be compromised meaning there must not be excessive pitting or holes in the targets.

RSOs will inspect steel targets to ensure these requirements are met. If they are not, you will not be permitted to use those steel targets on the Ironman range.

Minimum engagement distances for portable ballistic steel targets:

• Pistol - 10 yards (No pistol magnum calibers, FN 5.7 or +P ammo on steel)
• Magnum Caliber Pistols (.357mag, .44mag, +P) – 25 yards
  • DOES NOT INCLUDE .500 Smith and Wesson Magnum
• Pistol (Braced) / PCC / Rimfire Rifle - 25 yards
• Shotgun (Buck / Bird Shot) - 11 yards 
• Shotgun (Slug) - 55 yards
• 5.56mm / .223 Ball - 110 yards
• 7.62mm / .308 Ball - 165 yards
• 6.5 Creedmoor - 410 yards
• .300 Winchester Magnum / Norma Magnum – 410 yards
• .50 Caliber – 410 yards
• 6.8mm – Not authorized, paper targets only

Steel shooters may be segregated to one side of the firing line or other, and with a minimum lateral distance of 6 feet between steel shooters.

Paper Targets 

• Non-metal pistol targets placed closer than 25 yards must be as tall as the shooter.  
• Targets must not exceed the height of the impact area when viewed from your intended shooting position on the firing line.

Shooters must bring their own targets, target stands, tools, fasteners, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and other materials. The QSC only provides a safe range to shoot on.

FIRING LINE: Shooters are responsible for ensuring their target stands are not in the line of sight of other targets and they are not shooting someone else’s target. Know what is up and down range of your target. The RSOs will check this, and lost range time will result if an issue is discovered. 

CLEAN UP – PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT: All target material, shell casings, and trash must be removed from the range after firing. There should be no trace of activity left on the range other than lead in the berms. If you pack it in, pack it out. 

POLICE YOUR BRASS - All shooters are required to police their brass. Brass buckets are provided by QSC for brass, NOT trash. 

HEALTH & SAFETY: Shooters must bring their own water, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc.

RSOs: Your RSOs are volunteers, here for the safety of all club members and guests on the range.  Their commands are not negotiable. 

Our goal is to provide a SAFE, EFFICIENT and FUN range day for members and guests.

Range 1- Recreational Fire

Weather permitting, we may extend the firing line outside the Range 1 shoot house. If shooting in the prone position, it is advised to bring a shooting mat with you.

Range 1 - General Purpose Pistol, Rifle, and Tactical Shotgun Recreational Fire.

This is a 300-meter unknown distance range. Recreational calibers are authorized up to and including 50 BMG.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

• 338 Lapua is PROHIBITED on Range 1 per the USMC range SOP. However, be advised Range Control may place further restrictions on ammunition eligibility this weekend at any time for any reason. Their decision is NOT negotiable. Do not ask the RSOs to question their decision.
• There are updates to some minimum distances and new restrictions for shooting steel reactive targets. Please see the changes below in the Steel Reactive Target section of these notes. RSOs will check all distances for steel reactive targets prior to allowing the range to go hot.

• There will likely be a brief cease-fire, no more than 20 minutes, around 0945-1000. This will be the only opportunity for new shooters who are prepared and can set their target up in this time frame to participate. It is strongly suggested that anyone wishing to take this opportunity be on location and ready to go no later than 0930. Weather is a factor and may result in changes to this schedule. This is the RSO cadre's call. Rain, extreme heat, and so on can result in a shortened range day.

Course of Fire

• This is a 1000-yard shooting day only.
• If firing a 338 caliber, understand you may be refused if the airspace or distance X (6400yds) cannot be cleared. We ONLY know if 338 calibers can be approved on the morning of the event. Be prepared and bring an alternate caliber/rifle if possible.  

General Information

• Welcome - Members with capable equipment and a desire to learn, or improve their precision rifle marksmanship.  Please contact Kevin Roth (kroth@qscva.com) in advance of range day.

• Parking at 1000 yds permitted on the hill behind the 1000 yard line.

Steel & All Target Frames

• Set up time is 0715 - 0745. 
• UPON ARRIVAL SEE AN RSO FOR GUIDANCE AS TO WHERE TO SET UP. 
• GATE 7 WILL CLOSE AT 0745. 
• Don't come mid-morning and expect us to stop the range so you can set up, we come on time so you come on time. Big Boy Rules here.
• Lanes 20-29 are reserved for special targets and RSOs who spot for those challenges. (i.e., Milk Jug Challenge)
• Steel Targets are set at Lanes 30-41 only.
• Steel Targets.  Have your frame perfected before coming to the range. You do not have time to fool around and build the Taj Mahal, have your steel target sorted out for quick install / take down. Don't be that guy...come ready.

CLEAN UP – PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT: All target material, shell casings, and trash must be removed from the range after firing. There should be no trace of activity left on the range other than lead in the berms. If you pack it in, pack it out. 

POLICE YOUR BRASS - All shooters are required to police their brass. Brass buckets are provided by QSC for brass, NOT trash. 

HEALTH & SAFETY: Shooters must bring their own water, sunscreen, insect repellent, etc.

RSOs: Your RSOs are volunteers, here for the safety of all club members and guests on the range.  Their commands are not negotiable. 

Our goal is to provide a SAFE, EFFICIENT and FUN range day for members and guests.

The American Skeet and Trap The Shotgun Range includes 2 American skeet fields and 1 American trap field. The international (bunker) trap field is inoperable for the foreseeable future due to high-cost repairs necessary to refurbish the system. 

Range Schedule:

• Range opens to shooters: 0900
• Range closes to new shooters: 1230*
• All shooters and staff depart range:1300

* Shooters arriving after this time WILL NOT be allowed to start a new game. 

 On all shotgun ranges, range times are usually from 0900-1300. However, OIC may delay a start time and/or advance a closure time at any time and on their own volition due to multiple factors.  This includes, but is not limited to, on-scene weather (extreme heat, cold, high winds, rain, snow, giant flaming meteors), other QSC activities such as membership meeting, and/or general lack of member participation. It is always best to arrive closer to the range opening time than the closing time.   Shooters on the field should be ready to shoot the final rounds at least 30 minutes prior to the posted closing time. 

All shooters shall check-in/sign-in with the OIC/RSO before approaching the firing line on any shotgun field.

All shooters shall check-out with the OIC/RSO after shooting is completed to tally/record rounds fired.

Practice gun safety at all times.

1. Never enter the QSC clubhouse with a firearm.

2. Carry all shotguns unloaded with the actions open until you are standing at your firing position.

3. For members using auto-loaders and pump actions, load a maximum of two shells at a time - only.

4. Only 7.5, 8, and 9 shot is allowed. Never use shot larger than size 7.5. Slugs are not allowed.

5. RSO's have discretion over what types of shotguns are allowed. Generally, shotguns should have shoulder stocks and barrels longer than 24 inches. The firearm must be in good working order.

6. Hearing and eye protection is always required when shooting.

7. One game (trap or skeet) is 25 rounds and costs $6. Shooters must have scan cards to activate the readers located at each American skeet field to pay for the games on those fields. 

8. Children under 8 years of age are not allowed on the shotgun fields when the range is hot. Children 8 -18 must be continuously and immediately supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. The OIC/RSO may direct a child 8-18 to cease fire if the firearm being used does not fit the child's frame size as a matter of safety.
